About Me

It is 18 November 2018.  I am back in Antigua, Guatemala, a city that soaks you in color, art, coblestone streets, volcanoes, Spanish-style architecture, and beauty everywhere.  A city I hope to come back to many times!

About Me

It's 21 October 2018.  I am on a "photo safari" to Vendovi Island, courtesy of the San Juan Preservation Trust who owns and manages the island preserve.  The caretakers mention that there are lots of mushrooms on the trails...and they are right.  The skies are overcast but I have a new macro lens to try out!  Vendovi Island is open to visitors from April through September.

About Me

It's 19 September 2018.  On the ferry coming into Seattle from Bainbridge Island . The rain is just starting to fall. Seattle skyline at night with the Seattle Great Wheel. The other shots were taken on the same ferry on 13 Oct 2018 close to sunset.

About Me

It's 4 August 2018.  It's Orcas Island, naturally.  I hike the trail up Mt. Pickett in Moran State Park .  Deer are synonymous with the San Juan Islands but I never tire of them.  In the afternoon, I kayak from North Point to Point Doughty Natural Area Preserve  on some unusually calm water.  Rounding the point, I encounter dozen or so Pacific Harbor Seals including one young one fast asleep.  I kayak away quietly.

About Me

It's Sunday, 29 July 2018.  I take my daughter to American Camp (San Juan Island National Historic Park) on San Juan Island to search for the black fox...we are not disappointed.  It's mid-summer and and they have shed most of their coats...a good reason to come back in the Fall!  We go to on to  Lime Kiln State Park and are thrilled to see orcas of the J pod cruising right off shore...with occasional breaches to the thrill of all of us gawkers on shore. San Juan Island - take the ferry from Anacortes...you won't be disappointed.

About Me

The 2018  Rotary International Convention brings together people from around the world to teach, learn, share, meet new friends, and enjoy life; all in the spirit of providing service to others.  This year it is in Toronto, Ontario.  It's late June  - the convention is great...the weather is so so and then we get a beautiful sunny day and evening - I catch the ferry to Centre Island ...go.

About Me

It's Memorial Day Weekend, 2018.  We stay at the North Cascade Insitute on the shores of Diablo Lake in the North Cascades.  We venture up Highway 20 towards Washington Pass in the Okanogan-Wenatachee National Forest The high trails are still snow bound. The views are incredible; you can taste the freshness of the mountain air; Spring is just around the corner at these altitudes.

About Me

It's the May 5-6th weekend, 2018.  I am with a North Cascade Institute group onboard the beautiful sailing yawl, Orion , in the San Juans.  We sail first to Jones Island , make camp, hike, and watch a beautiful sunset.  Oh, and there is this barred owl.  In the morning we sail to Yellow Island and hike in fields of flowers. To find out more, visit Deep Green Wilderness .

About Me

It's the Olympic Birdfest weekend, April 13-15, 2018 in Sequim.  Our group goes out on Friday and counts almost 90 different bird species!  When in Sequim, you won't want to miss visiting the Dungeness River Audubon Center .

About Me

It's SpringBreak, the first week of April, 2018.  In Maui. It's been cloudy and rainy; sometimes even torrential downpours. But, it's Maui and there have been some good sunbreaks.  The boardwalk and beach at  Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge does not disappoint!

About Me

It's the 18th of March 2018. The skies are partly cloudy and the diffuse lighting makes it tough on picture taking...the day gets better.  This is the Skagit Wildlife Area .  It's an impressive estuary area with two great walking trails. Exit 221 on I5 at Conway.

About Me

It's the 10 and 11th of March 2018 and I am at the North Cacades Institute Learning Center at Diablo Lake.  There is still snow on the hiking trails and breathtaking views everywhere.  Two spillways are open at the Diablo Lake Dam making for an impressive show of water, spray and power!  Winter in the North Cascades - worth going to!

About Me

It's Saturday, 3rd of March 2018.  We get another reprieve from the cloudy/rainy skies of winter; temperatures are in the low 40s.  I'm off to my favorite winter area, the Skagit Valley.  It's always changing.  I run into a few newly arrived male hummingbirds staking out their territory along the Upland Trail at the Breazeale Padilla Bay Interpretive Center . Lots of bald eagles and hawks abound; and especially harriers.  I shoot lots of photos but one outshines them all...one of my favorite birds, a beautiful male kestrel .  Taken on the Bayview Edison Road, between, naturally, Bayview and Edison - a long road but the birds won't disappoint you in the winter.

About Me

It's President’s Day,19 February 2018.  The Skagit Valley of Washington is a birder's mecca in the winter.  In almost every field, one sees flocks of ducks, swans, geese, or gulls; hawks and bald eagles abound.   Take I-5 north from Seattle, exit on 534 at Conway, and head west for La Conner.  Favorite areas include: Fir Island Farm Game Reserve , Padilla Bay Trail , Padilla Bay Interpretive Center and its trails, and the Bayview Edison Road to Samish Island.

About Me

It's 14 January 2018.  A break in the rains brings me to American Camp, San Juan Island National Historical Camp .  The views of Mt. Baker are incredible, and so are the Olympics from South Beach.  I watch jet-black foxes with white-tipped tails playing in the distance and then this red fox walks up and sits near me.  It is a great way to spend a Sunday.
